The Lernaean Hydra was a monster in Greek mythology. It had many heads and every time someone would cut off one of them, two more heads would grow out of the stump. In some stories, the Lernaean Hydra was resurrected to become one of the guardians of the Underworld, not just a defender of an entrance, and so the Hydra would work in the domain of Hades, alongside its sibling, Cerberus.
